I take public service and community outreach seriously. Below are some of my outreach activities since 2014.
- Resilient Interdisciplinary Social-Ecological (RISE). Tammy Elwell, Steven Gaines, and I developed this summer research program at UCSB’s Marine Science Institute (MSI). It pairs undergraduate students with graduate student mentors to conduct independent research projects. Learn more about RISE here
- Girls Exploring Science and Technology (GEST). Sarah Loftus and I co-founded this 1-day STEM event in 2016, and it has been ongoing annually since. Find out more about GEST here
- SciREN (The Scientific Research and Educator Network), North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, Pine Knoll Shores, NC
- Community Food Lab, Raleigh, NC
- Blue Heron Bowl (National Ocean Sciences Bowl), UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC
- Women and Math (WAM) Mentoring Program, Durham, NC
- English classes, Puerto de Agua Verde, Baja California Sur, Mexico. While conducting fieldwork, I gave free English classes 1-2x a week formally in partnership with the local schools (high school students and middle school students) and informally to adults, Oct – Dec 2017
